What is emotional numbness?
Emotional numbness is a disconnection from your own feelings. It is a response from your brain to block out pain, similar to how a doctor numbs an area for a procedure. It is a natural survival mechanism that we use to protect ourselves from traumatic or very painful experiences.
Although many of us will experience it at some point in our lives, it can become a barrier to well-being when it is prolonged or prevents us from processing difficult situations and connecting with others.
How does emotional numbness feel?
Unlike sadness or anger, emotional numbness is difficult to identify and describe, especially if you are not fully aware of what you are experiencing.
Here are some common descriptions:
- Feeling detached from others, even when interacting with them.
- Feeling invisible or that your actions don't have an impact.
- Perceiving the world as if it is not quite real, as if you are watching a movie.
- Being unable to fully engage or respond to situations.
- Feeling a sense of emptiness.
- Inability to concentrate or connect with the present moment.
- Feeling like you cannot experience happiness or joy, even towards people who have made you happy in the past.
