What is Gestalt?

Gestalt therapy is more than just a simple therapeutic technique; it is a philosophy of life. Gestalt is an invitation to live a more conscious existence and to focus on the experience of the present. This involves taking responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and actions. It is an existential attitude, the "gestaltic attitude," and is based on philosophical and existential principles that confront us with the fundamental issues of human life, such as death, freedom, solitude, and meaning.

Key Principles of Gestalt:

Living in the present: Gestalt focuses on the "here and now." The past is considered a memory in the present and the future as a fantasy that anticipates the now. The goal is to become aware of what one feels, thinks, and does in the current moment to resolve the "unfinished business" that affects daily life.

Consciousness or awareness: It is the ability to realize what happens within oneself and in the environment. Gestalt therapy seeks to expand this awareness so that the person can perceive their needs and act more integrally.

Responsibility: Gestalt promotes that each individual takes charge of their own decisions and emotions. It is about moving from a state of "blaming" others to a state of self-responsibility for one's own life.

Gestalt therapy provides tools to address these issues inherent to the human condition, facilitating a process of self-knowledge and personal growth. Gestalt therapy addresses the fundamental existential issues faced by human beings.

In my therapy, I integrate these themes, understanding it not just as a set of techniques, but as a philosophy of life. There are four main existential themes that Gestalt therapy helps to confront.

Death: The recognition of our own finitude is a driving force to live fully. Gestalt therapy invites us to become aware that life is limited, which can motivate us to stop postponing and to live the present more intensely.

Freedom: Accepting that we are free to choose our actions, thoughts, and emotions makes us responsible for our life. Gestalt therapy seeks for the person to stop being a victim of circumstances and to become the author of their own existence.

Loneliness: Gestalt addresses loneliness as an inevitable part of the human experience. It confronts us with the idea that ultimately, it is us who must give meaning to our life, and that the search for external validation cannot fill that void.

Meaning: Gestalt therapy helps individuals explore and discover their own meaning of life, without imposing a single truth. It focuses on finding significance in one's own experiences and in personal relationships, assuming the responsibility to create a personal purpose.

Gestalt is the cornerstone of my Reposact method, and I use it to verbalize the emerging emotions that arise when using the techniques and body therapies prior to the spoken session. If you want to know more about my Reposact method, write to me or call me.
